Mexico, third in the world in cosmetic surgeries

Mexico occupies third place in the world in terms of the number of cosmetic surgeries, however, in this area some improvised general practitioners and other professionals without specialization practice, which implies serious risks, from not obtaining the expected results, to the most serious thing that it is death.

Antonio Fuente del Campo, academic from the UNAM Faculty of Medicine (FM), highlighted that the increase in the number of cosmetic surgeries is also due to the fact that many of these interventions are currently carried out under local anesthesia, which has reduced the cost and fear in patients.

However, he stated, that doctors need to prepare, since they are interventions that even require artistic perception, “since it is not just about cutting and separating, but about shaping; it is like making a sculpture, but in a living being ”.

The plastic surgeon explained that this specialty includes, in addition to aesthetic interventions, the management of burns, facial trauma, reconstruction and care for congenital malformations in the face, limbs or genitals.

The university student mentioned that the most requested cosmetic surgeries depend on the sex and age of the patient: “the most frequent among young women is nose correction, breast augmentation and liposculpture.”

In the case of men, when they are young they seek surgery for the nose, ears and liposuction of areas where fat has accumulated.

Liposuction is also a highly requested procedure, particularly of the abdomen. “Out of every 10 surgeries to rejuvenate, nine are for women and one for men,” he said.

The expert issued a recommendation: if the decision to undergo a procedure of this type was made, it is necessary to look for a plastic surgeon certified by the Mexican Council of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery, who preferably is part of the Mexican Association of Surgery Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive.

“Before, people did not have cosmetic surgery because it involved large wounds and long recovery processes; now this has changed “
